Tom Shortt

Tom’s initial curiosity for movement arose when he was studying a diploma in Theatre and Performance at The Canberra Academy of Dramatic Art from 2012 to 2015. Tom’s interest in performance had dwindled, however, by the end of the diploma, being replaced by a new spark of attraction toward the movement practices he had experienced along the way. He had a particular interest in the yogic elements his teacher, Clare Moss, had included in the curriculum.

As soon as drama school finished, Tom started searching for a yoga studio with teachers and a philosophy that resonated with him. Eventually he landed at Power Yoga Canberra and began practising under the guidance of Marcus and Justine Janssen. Physicality aside, Tom found his yoga practice initiated a deeper process of self-observation and inner work, which was very much needed due to other life challenges he was facing at the time. After a couple of years of daily practice, Tom decided to become a teacher so he could share the tools and concepts that had helped him. He completed his yoga teacher training and taught classes at various studios for the following four years. In 2018, he attended an intro course at Praksis and committed himself as a student of ours shortly thereafter, joining the practitioner program in early 2019.

Training at Praksis was the first time in his life Tom had looked seriously at developing a strong physical practice. Feeling himself transcend both physical and mental limitations through the training and support at Praksis, Tom now finds himself in a state of unrelenting curiosity. He is constantly looking to grow, be challenged and learn about anything that might help him in his future endeavours as a movement practitioner and teacher. Tom joined our teaching team in winter 2021.
