Praksis is Canberra’s first and only dedicated movement facility. It is the gym for Canberrans who don’t like gyms.
Our approach to physical development is based on the concept of movement practice, weaving together content from an array of different disciplines with the underlying intention of improving our experience of being in a body.
We work with people of all levels and ages. There are no prerequisites — every class is open to everybody. All our students, as well as our teachers, started out as complete beginners and followed the same process we offer to newcomers.
We have four main class types:
1. Strength: developing serious strength and resilience throughout the body.
2. Handstands: teaching people with zero experience how to balance on their hands.
3. Mobility: permanently increasing range of motion and improving articulation of the hips, shoulders and spine.
4. Movement Practice: building on the preparatory work undertaken in our other classes with the goal of developing further movement complexity and physical intelligence, constantly learning new movements and throwing ourselves into open improvisational scenarios as a way of exploring and deepening our experience of embodiment.
WHERE TO START?
Just come to class. Almost everyone feels nervous about attending for the first time. Don’t let that stop you. Our teaching approach is flexible and individualised; we can always work around and, where possible, work on whatever it is that might be restricting you. Newcomers get their first two classes for the price of one ($30).
