Keiran Deck - Teacher

Keiran grew up playing lots of different sports but not really excelling at any of them. “A giraffe on ice” might be an apt description. He learnt to love playing cricket and taekwondo with strong credit to two fantastic coaches who let him make mistakes in a safe and patient environment. Had they not been there, he may have left physical activity behind early in his life.

Fast forward to his early 20s and Keiran started pushing his skills in taekwondo, competing at an international level for a time until he realised that his passion lay in the skill development, not the competition.

He trained in a range of martial arts across a 7-year period including boxing and Brazilian jiu jitsu. The movement he loved, the politics not so much. So it was serendipitous that when he started to discover Ido Portal’s philosophy, and the movement community more broadly, Praksis opened up in Canberra.

It was not so lucky that his discovery of Praksis came at the same time as a planned move to Sydney. So for two years Keiran trained at Falsegrip in Sydney, where he learned the fundamentals of gymnastics as an adult.

In late 2019 Keiran had a trampoline accident that left him with a subluxed C5 and C6. Thankfully the dislocated vertebrae didn’t hurt his spinal cord and he made a full physical recovery. This set his movement journey back a year but also kicked off an often painful but extremely profound mental health journey. At the same time, he started Secret Ninja School which aimed to introduce young children to the same fundamental movements and the positive psychology principles Keiran was learning.

Keiran and his partner Courtney moved back to Canberra in 2022 and promptly joined Praksis as students. They found belonging in the community and quickly moved from twice a week students to daily practitioners. In late 2024 Keiran stepped up to start sharing his years of knowledge and experience as a guest coach here at Praksis. In 2025 he moved into a more permanent role as a coach and continues to learn and grow at every opportunity.
